SDCC 13 Countdown

Herewith to help thee bide thee time till SDCC find featured a weekly themed countdown. By royal decree, our first theme suggests you tune in to HBO and honor the season premiere of Game of Thrones at nightfall this Sunday.
Seven and three quarter fortnights shall pass until SDCC 2013.

We know, we too wish SDCC would be here on the morrow.

Consoled thee be with the fact that the kingdoms have prepared 10 all new episodes of Game of Thrones to bide our time while we wait.

Thanks be to the Seven because ConSweetCon needs something to occupy  our restless souls while waiting endlessly for the Winds of Winter.
Winter is coming
With any luck, ConSweetCon will get stuck in an elevator  with Rob and Theon again this year

Check back with us next week to see what our theme shall be!

The Zoo Beyond SDCC

(aka - the San Diego Zoo)
My daughter was in awe looking down from our hotel's vantage point on the literal swarm of people streaming through the streets of San Diego headed into preview night. Large South Park and Adventure Time balloons floated in the skyline and people teamed through the streets in ant-like fashion.
There's no argument that SDCC is a zoo unto itself. However whether it's by design or happenstance, if you find yourself with extra time in San Diego they have a world-class zoo that's not to be missed.

The grounds are gorgeous. It's near Balboa Park and the entire zoo itself feels like a park. The exhibits immerse you in the animals' habitats. The sheer creativity is awe inspiring. While it's a very busy zoo (and the only one I've ever been in with people movers!) there are plenty of places to sit and observe. You'll need those respites and very comfortabl…

Part Deux: Enjoying Your San Diego Trip Without A Four Day Pass

Here at Con Sweet Con, we would never leave you hanging. So here are more con-related off-site events that either reoccur every year, or give you an idea of similar events you can to look forward to. This will definitely fill those days you find yourself badgeless! Seriously, as you will read we could not even participate in them all ourselves between the six of us.
Nerd HQ is one of those events we did not get to experience ourselves. We tried to score tickets to the panels last year, no such luck. However, it sounds like you can drop by at anytime to partake in good old fashioned nerd fun. Per their site they state last year's activities included: “Xbox, the gaming sponsor of the Nerd HQ, will once again fill the event with 40 gaming stations featuring the newest and yet to be released titles. Crystal Dynamics will debut the first playable demo of the completely reborn Tomb Raider franchise, exclusively at the HQ. Vizio, the technology sponsor of the Nerd HQ, will provide Laptops…

Find A New Hero Series: Mike Hampton

Here at Con Sweet Con, we are pretty nerdy. That sometimes means we hesitate to come out of our shell, which when you are surrounded by thousands of people and are now face to face with talented folks, can mean we miss opportunities to really get in touch with both the art and the people behind the art and those folding tables. Our "Find a New Hero" series aims to break these barriers down and provide our readers insight into the minds and art featured at SDCC.
Personally I knew exactly where I wanted to start, Mike Hampton. I believe we first met four years ago at SDCC. After checking out his Hot Zombie Chicks comics and seeing his ability to draw con-goers on the spot, I knew I needed him to create something special for me. The piece was an American Gothic zombie portrait of my then fiance and myself. It was featured on our wedding programs for our Halloween wedding, and let me say it is my favorite piece of artwork we own.
Mike has been busy since we first me - making music…

BioNerd Seeking Extra-Curricular SDCC Activity?

Looking for a life sciences geek seeking
a fun, non-SDCC activity while in San Diego's
SoCal frame of mind. Do you enjoy rolling waves,
sun, sand and surf? Ready for the wildlife?

No, this is not a personal ad
We spent a morning last year enjoying a kayaking tour of the La Jolla Ecological Reserve's underwater park and coastal caves. It's something not to be missed! Whether you want to walk along the tidal pools, swim in the surf, snorkel the cove or scuba dive into the kelp beds, there's no shortage of interesting life to observe. Kayaking might just be the easiest way to enjoy the views though. No prior experience is necessary - you'll be in a recreational ocean kayak that will not fill with water or sink. If you do fall off the kayak, your life jacket will keep you buoyant. Everyone is required to wear a helmet but that's really more of a reflection of our litigious society than your odds of hitting a rock with your skull.

Enjoying Your San Diego Trip Without A Four Day Pass

Eat yourself happy!
Our first trip to San Diego was based entirely around a one day pass to San Diego Comic Con. We flew from Philadelphia with no clue about the spectacle we were about to enjoy. At the time, we weren’t the people finding details on Twitter or other sites. We just walked into the madness. In fact, not everyone in our vacation party even had tickets to SDCC. They still got to experience the madness of Gaslamp during the con. Obviously it worked out well because none of us has missed one SDCC since! Do not fret if you did not get a four day pass or even a few day tickets. There is plenty to enjoy in the lovely city of San Diego and the surrounding areas without the SDCC inside or outside events. On most trips I am my group's travel coordinator, lovingly referred to as the Social Director. I also am a foodie at heart. As a result, a lot of my travel recommendations revolve around food. Along the way there have been many hits with a few misses mixed in there too. Since …

SDCC 2012 WWE Mattel Panel

This was the first panel I attended at SDCC of 2012. The energy in the room was electrifying as three superstars were introduced to answer questions from the fans and discuss Mattel action figures. First was Zach Ryder, a fan favorite as he was cutting edge in the way that he ascended in popularity with WWE fans. Zach did this by creating his own YouTube show which created buzz and notoriety as a result. Next was Ireland’s own Sheamus, another popular superstar with WWE fans. I yelled, "hey fellow’ as the crowd calmed, as this is one of Sheamus’s catch phrases. The superstars were very interactive with the crowd, and Sheamus was no different, as he quickly yelled back, "Yeah fellow". Next to come to the front was the most popular and arguably hottest superstar at the time, CM Punk. He is known for his straight edge lifestyle and straight forward mic skills.

The superstars sat down and the crowd calmed. Zach spoke about feeling he "made it" …
