BioNerd Seeking Extra-Curricular SDCC Activity?

Looking for a life sciences geek seeking
a fun, non-SDCC activity while in San Diego's
SoCal frame of mind. Do you enjoy rolling waves,
sun, sand and surf? Ready for the wildlife?

No, this is not a personal ad
We spent a morning last year enjoying a kayaking tour of the La Jolla Ecological Reserve's underwater park and coastal caves. It's something not to be missed! Whether you want to walk along the tidal pools, swim in the surf, snorkel the cove or scuba dive into the kelp beds, there's no shortage of interesting life to observe. Kayaking might just be the easiest way to enjoy the views though. No prior experience is necessary - you'll be in a recreational ocean kayak that will not fill with water or sink. If you do fall off the kayak, your life jacket will keep you buoyant. Everyone is required to wear a helmet but that's really more of a reflection of our litigious society than your odds of hitting a rock with your skull.

Checkout the Local Biodiversity... and Dr. Seuss's House
On our tour we saw so many species I felt like my head was on a swivel. Dolphins, sea lions, harbor seals, leopard sharks, shovelnose guitarfish, bat(man) rays and of course the Human Torch of the kelp beds - Garibaldi! Our guides expertly pointed out species sightings so all could enjoy. They even gave us a history lesson on the reserve and the homes on the coast, including the former home of Dr. Seuss and the tale of a possible link to his famous red fish! If your guides don't include the tale in their tour, please reach out and we'll be happy to share.

Make it so
There are several companies organizing tours of this area. The equipment we saw on the water appeared nearly identical, except in color. Tour guides are certainly the differentiating factors. Being that is such a personal choice and often luck of the draw, we'll simply list the businesses we saw on the water that day.

Yes! My husband and I did this last year and it was AMAZING! If you sign up for LivingSocial and/or Groupon deals for San Diego, you can often go for a discounted rate.

    1. @wingedmonkeyevents Yes, absolutely! Great addition I forgot about, thank you! Much to my hubby's chagrin I'm not the best deal finder of our bunch (it's NikkiRo *cough*) ...and one warning for everyone else: every morning when I open those emails I am reminded how much I <3 San Diego ...and I have found myself drawn back even outside of SDCC ...mind you there are worse cities to find yourself in! Thanks again for the great tip!
